Wood Furniture

How is solid wood different from wood veneer furniture?

Solid wood furniture is crafted entirely from hardwood or softwood, which provides inherent durability and the unique ability to age gracefully. Unlike wood veneer furniture, which consists of a thin layer of wood glued onto a core of plywood or fibreboard, solid wood pieces are made from whole wood throughout. This construction not only offers superior longevity and strength but also allows for refinishing, repairs, and restorations, enhancing its lifespan even further. Solid wood tends to have a higher quality appearance and feel, making it a popular choice for those seeking furniture that offers both durability and aesthetic appeal.

Machine-made vs handmade furniture: what's the difference?

The primary difference between machine-made and handmade furniture lies in the craftsmanship and uniqueness of each piece. Machine-made furniture is produced using automated machinery, which allows for high precision and uniformity in large quantities. This process often results in a more consistent product at a lower cost but can lack distinct character. On the other hand, handmade furniture is crafted by skilled artisans who can pay close attention to detail and imbue each piece with a sense of individuality and bespoke quality. Handmade solid wood furniture often features unique design elements, superior durability, and the personal touch of the craftsman’s hand, making each piece a one-of-a-kind work of art. Although it may come at a higher price, the craftsmanship, quality, and aesthetic appeal often make it a worthwhile investment.

Are MDF or plywood considered solid wood?

No, MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) and plywood are not considered solid wood. Both are types of engineered wood, made from wood fibres or veneers bonded with resins. While these materials are often used in furniture making for their stability and ease of manufacturing, they do not provide the same level of durability, repairability, or natural beauty as solid wood. Furniture made from MDF or plywood is generally less expensive, but it does not have the longevity or the ability to be refurbished like solid wood furniture.

How long does solid wood furniture last?

Solid wood furniture is renowned for its longevity and durability. With proper care and maintenance, solid wood pieces can last for generations. The lifespan typically ranges from several decades to over a hundred years when well-maintained. Factors such as the type of wood, the quality of construction, and the environment in which the furniture is kept can influence its durability. Regular cleaning, avoiding excessive moisture and sunlight exposure, and timely repairs can significantly extend the life of solid wood furniture, making it a sustainable choice that can be passed down through the ages.

Teakwood Furniture

Which is better, oak or teak?

Both oak and teak are highly durable and popular for furniture, but teak is often preferred for its exceptional weather resistance, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor settings. Teak contains natural oils that repel moisture and pests, making it more suitable for adverse conditions. Oak, while sturdy and beautiful, is better suited for indoor furniture unless specially treated for outdoor use.

Why is teak furniture so expensive?

Teakwood is considered a premium material for furniture due to its superior durability, natural oils, and tight grain, which protect it from pests, rot, and the elements. Its slow growth rate and high demand also contribute to its higher price. Teak's longevity and timeless appeal make it a cost-effective choice over the long term, justifying the initial investment for high-quality teak furniture.

Is teak furniture hard to maintain?

Teak furniture is surprisingly easy to maintain, especially suited to the busy lifestyles of today’s households. It naturally resists decay, moisture, and warping, which means it doesn’t require frequent treatment. To maintain its natural colour, a simple application of teak oil once a year is sufficient. Otherwise, a wash with soapy water a couple of times a year will keep your teak furniture looking great.

Does teak furniture stain easily?

Teak is less prone to staining than many other woods due to its high oil content, which creates a barrier that resists spills and stains. However, like all wood, it can be susceptible to stains from harsh chemicals or prolonged exposure to highly pigmented substances. Prompt cleaning and occasional light sanding and re-oiling will help maintain its pristine condition.

Reclaimed Wood Furniture

Is reclaimed wood better than new wood?

Reclaimed wood is often considered better than new wood for several reasons. Environmentally, it's a superior choice because it reduces the demand for new timber, thereby lessening deforestation and waste. Aesthetically, reclaimed wood has a unique character and history that new wood lacks, featuring rich textures and deep patinas developed over years. It's also typically sourced from old-growth wood, which is denser and more durable than the younger new wood often used today.

Is reclaimed wood furniture safe for children and pets?

Reclaimed wood furniture is indeed safe and an excellent choice for households with children or pets. Each piece undergoes a rigorous cleaning and finishing process to remove any potential hazards, such as old nails, splinters, or residual chemicals. The wood is then sealed with non-toxic finishes to ensure there are no harmful substances that can affect your home’s environment.

Will reclaimed wood furniture rot easily?

Reclaimed wood furniture is less likely to rot if maintained properly. Due to its age, reclaimed wood has already been exposed to different climatic conditions, making it more stable and less prone to splitting or warping. To ensure longevity, keep your reclaimed wood furniture in a dry environment and treat it with oils or sealants that protect against moisture. Regular maintenance will keep your reclaimed wood pieces in excellent condition for years.

Can I left reclaimed wood furniture outside?

While reclaimed wood is durable and full of character, it is generally not recommended to leave it outdoors unprotected due to the UK's variable weather conditions. Prolonged exposure to moisture and extreme temperatures can deteriorate the wood over time.

Rattan Furniture

What's the difference between rattan, cane and wicker? Which is better?

Rattan is a naturally growing vine-like species that is native to tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Australasia, and is known for its sturdy yet flexible properties. Cane refers to the outer skin of the rattan stalk, which is used as a weaving material. Wicker, on the other hand, is a technique rather than a material. It involves weaving natural materials like rattan, cane, bamboo, and other synthetic fibres.

Each material and technique has its unique benefits. Rattan is incredibly strong and durable, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor furniture. Cane is generally used for its aesthetic appeal to create intricate patterns on furniture surfaces. Wicker furniture is prized for its craftsmanship and versatility, capable of being made from various materials to suit different tastes and needs.

Rattan is typically better for full furniture pieces that require durability, while cane is excellent for decorative detail and lightweight items. Wicker furniture offers a broad range of styling options due to the variety of materials that can be used in the weaving process.

Can rattan chairs be left outside?

Natural rattan chairs are primarily suited for indoor use because they are made from a naturally occurring material that is sensitive to the direct sunlight and rain. When natural rattan is exposed to moisture, such as rain or even high humidity, it can absorb water which leads to swelling, warping, or becoming brittle when it dries. Sunlight can also be detrimental; UV rays can fade the rattan's color and cause the material to become dry and crack over time.

For outdoor use, synthetic rattan is recommended because it is designed to withstand the sun, rain, and temperature variations, making it ideal for garden or patio furniture.

Is rattan furniture difficult to maintain?

Rattan furniture is surprisingly easy to maintain. For cleaning, simply wipe down with a damp cloth or use a mild soap for tougher stains. Avoid harsh chemicals as they can damage the material. For maintenance, keep natural rattan pieces away from extreme conditions like prolonged sunlight or moisture to preserve its look and durability.

Are rattan chairs comfortable?

Rattan chairs are known for their comfort. The weaving technique allows for a bit of give, providing a natural cushioning effect. You can also use a padded cushions for added comfort, making them perfect for long seating periods. Their light-weight design makes them easy to move, enhancing their comfort and versatility.
